Onyx is a typically black variety of agate. Onyx comes through Latin (of the same spelling), from the Ancient Greek, meaning ‘claw‘ or ‘fingernail‘. Onyx with pink and white bands can sometimes resemble a fingernail.

It is believed to have an outstanding ability to build inner strength, connect to courage, eliminate fears and shield the mind and body from negative energies. The ancient Roman soldiers carried Onyx amulets during battles. Today we still consider a piece of Onyx jewellery as a great protective talisman.
