Gold vermeil on silver with carnelian cabochon
British Museum Ashurbanipal selection, 2018
These intricate earrings are inspired by the palmette crown of the Assyrian ‘Tree of Life’ motif which was very prevalent in the region and appears on royal garments and jewellery, official seals, and the wall paintings and sculptures of royal palaces. Features 24k gold vermeil on silver with a carnelian cabochon as its centrepiece.
Carnelian is a translucent reddish-brown gemstone which was once thought to still the blood and calm the temper. The colour can vary greatly, ranging from pale orange to an intense almost-black coloration.
